LARGEST STOCK Iff THE STATE. LOWEST PRICES. NORTH CAROLINA. Winston Sentinel : North Carolina is not a tax ridden State. This is a fact which may be used to attract settlers. Concord Standard: Prof. John L Weber, who has held the chair of Eng lish at Trinity College, has resigned, and will return to his old home in South Carolina. James Pate, a white farmer of An son county, accidentally shot his 7-year-old daughter in the head. Though several shots entered her brain the phy sicians say she will recover. Goldsboro Argus: The sad news reached this city by telegram yesterday afternoon of the drowning yesterday in the river at Newbern of Mr. Will Royal, a brother of Mr. Jno. O. Royal of this city. The Democrat says: Evangelist W. P. Fife has concluded a very successful meeting at Charleston, West Virginia. It is undoubtedly the most remarkable series of meetings ever held in Charles ton. All Christians feel that the spirit is working in their midst. Greensboro Peiord: It seems the newspapers are determined to have Mrs. Keogh dead. It gives the Record pleas ure to again state that she is not dead, but on the contrary is almost well, hav ing been sick for some time. A tele gram was received here this evening at 4 o'clock to that effect. Newbern Courier: Maj. Edward Whit ford died at his home near Vanceboro, Sunday evening, March 19th, of heart failure, in the 5(5th year of his age. He was a man who occupied, "in the esti mation of thos&who knew him, a place second to none. He was one of the most gallant s of the Confederacy and a brother oi io late Col. Jno. N. Whitford. " Raleigh N.-O.-Chronicle : Gov. Carr authorized a special term of Greene county Supreme court to begin May the 21st, Judge George H. Brown pre-, siding, for the trial of civil cases. ' There is to be a base ball game plaved at vvaKe rorest between the Wake For est team and the A. and M. college team on the 24th. A dispatch from Jacksonville says that Senator Vance has left for St. Augustine, but that while he was feeling stronger, hishuJfh was still precarious. Richmond Dispatch: Hon. Fabius H. Busbee, of Raleigh, N. C, has ac cepted the invitation to deliver the ad dress on April 5th before the graduating class of the University College of Medi cine (formerly College of Phvsicians and Surgeons), of this cityon the occa sion of their - first annual commence ment. Mr. Busbee is one of North Carolina's most distinguished lawyers, and will be accorded a most heartv reception by his many friends and admirers in this city. Durham Globe: Fraternities flourish at most of the principal colleges m the country, and the State University is no exception to the rule. There are more than a dozen of these brotherhoods there now, and about 125 boys are in cluded in their membership. But all is not serene among tne Uhaoel Hill boys now. In fact the "frats" and "anti-frats bid fair to have a lively time of it. Opponents of the fraterni ties say that the faculty at Chapel Hill are opposed to the existing state of af fairs, but are powerless to prevent it. Durham Globe: Col." W. T. Black- well has received his commission as postmaster at Durhatn, and takes charge at once. Katie Williams, a colored woman who lives here, went to her home at Woodsdale, not many days age, and committed suicide by jumping into the river. She left a letter for her father that indicates the unsettling of her mind. Dr. J. D. Roberts and family left this afternoon for Glade City, Fla. , which place they will make their home. Durham regrets to give up such good citizens but she wishes them good speed in the sunny land of flowers. " Wimton Sentinel : Rev. Henry Ful ton, of Forsyth, who ran for the State Senate on the Democratic ticket a few j years agoT attempted, to "shake off this mortal coil ' with an old blind bridle a few days ago. Mr. Fulton is a good de bater and preaches the doctrine of the Northern Methodist Church ; but it ap- pears-that his faith was insufficient to keep him from attempting to commit suicide. A gentleman who liyes not many miles from Mr. Fulton, says he (Fulton) would have doubtless commit ted the crime had not his wife inter fered when she did. He was found hanging in the barn when Mrs. Fulton, happened to save his neck. Durham Sun: Mrs. J. R. Adams, mother of W. and J.. H. Adams, lives at Dutchville, in Granville county. On her place she has a tenaftt house occu pied by Henrietta Hobgood and her three children, the youngest about 2 years old. On Thursday morning Hen rietta went out to attend to some duties on the place and left the children at the house. Several hours afterwards I the cabin was discovered to be -on fire, and it burned down, also burning to death the youngest child. Did you ever see one? Mr. Jim Williams, who lives on the Hall road, about seven miles from town, and who hauls wood here for 50 cents a loads, has a cross pived mule, something you do not see often. This mule is 27 years old and to walk around him he seems to be look ing twenty-seven different ways. Monroe Journal: A convention of Third party representatives met in the court house here last Saturday for the purpose of taking steps towards organi zation. A county executive committee was appointed, consisting of one man from each township. Last Thursday evening John Hart, colored, came into the town from the-field where he had been at work, badly wounded in the har-k and with a gash on the head. He said that his father, Enoch, had tried to kill him while he was m a hole which was intended to be a well, by throwing rocks on him. He got out of the hole and then Enoch cut him with an axe 1' times before he made an escape. Enoch, however, tells an entirely dif ferent story, and says that John tried to kill him and he fought in self-defense. Nobody knows which tried to kill the other. Enoch owned coasiderable prop erty in Monroe, but had deeded it to John some years ago. Charlotte Observer: Mr. W. C.
